Youth Group Mission Trip
St John's youth and their adult leaders are headed to the Rural Mission on Johns Island, South Carolina. The Mission, founded in 1969, is an ecumenical agency supported by many denominations. It's vision is " foster, promote and minister to the spiritual, economic, social, educational, medical and housing needs of residents of the Sea Islands, serving Johns Island, Wadmalaw Island, Yonges Island and Edisto Island across ethnic and religious lines." The Sea Islands lie outside of Charleston. Rural Mission's programs and services improve the quality of life for Sea Island residents through the Sea Island Comprehensive Health Care Corporation Health Clinic and Rural Housing Project. Other areas of mission are: the Headstart Program, Crisis Assistance and Intervention, Hope for the Future (supports college students), Advocacy and Counseling, and the Sunshine Prayer Group. The interesting dynamic in these sea islands is that wealth and affluence dominate the islands that have Atlantic Ocean frontage (Kiawah and Seabrook) while those islands that do not have this access wallow in extreme poverty. Our group will be comprised of approximately 15 youth and adult leaders. We will be staying at a local church on Wadmalaw Island and our work will likely be house painting. We will be cooking our own meals. In addition to the physical work we will do, our trip will also provide us opportunities to visit a Tea Plantation, Charleston and Fort Sumter. And of course, we will enjoy the sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean.
You
can help our Youth accomplish this wonderful mission by purchasing a
Share of Stock. That will not only give you the feeling of
being part of this mission, but will enable you to attend the
Shareholders dinner. This dinner will be prepared and served by
the Workcampers where you can experience the trip through pictures and
feelings of the participants. Please contact the Church office at 663-1608 for any questions or to purchase your Share. |
